The Bihar Water Resources Department (WRD) operates gauge and barrage stations on the rivers most prone to sudden flow changes, publishing discharge readings (in cusecs — cubic feet per second) roughly every two hours.

Kosi (Barahkshetra site)
The Kosi's upstream gauge on the Nepal side, watched as an early indicator before flows reach Bihar. The Kosi is historically known as the "Sorrow of Bihar" for its dramatic course shifts and severe monsoon flooding in North Bihar.
Kosi (Birpur Barrage)
The Kosi's main barrage gauge at its entry point into Bihar — the most closely watched site on the river for flood-control operations in the North Bihar plains.
Gandak (Valmikinagar Barrage)
The Gandak enters Bihar from Nepal and the Terai, and its Valmikinagar Barrage gauge is the primary early-warning point for West Champaran and the districts downstream along its course.
Sone
The Sone is one of the Ganga's largest southern tributaries, draining much of the Bihar plateau region; its Indrapuri Barrage gauge feeds major irrigation canals across South Bihar.
Falgu
The Falgu flows past Gaya and is central to Hindu Pitrupaksha rituals performed on its banks — much of the year it runs as a subterranean/seasonal river, which is why its gauge often reads at or near zero cusecs outside the monsoon.
