Patna is set to witness a transformative leap in urban transportation and tourism with the launch of its Water Metro service. The initiative follows the signing of a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Tourism Department, Government of Bihar, and the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) in Bhavnagar, Gujarat. The project aims to develop a tourism-friendly urban water transport system, offering citizens a safe, modern, and eco-friendly travel option.
Under this initiative, state-of-the-art hybrid electric catamaran vessels like ‘MV Nishadraj’ will be operated. These vessels are capable of running on both battery and hybrid modes, ensuring zero carbon emissions. Each vessel can accommodate around 100 passengers, including two wheelchair users, and will feature fully air-conditioned and comfortable facilities for travelers.
The MoU, signed at a grand ceremony in Bhavnagar in the presence of Union Ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and Mansukh Mandaviya, was executed by IWAI Chairman Sunil Kumar Singh and Nand Kishore, Managing Director of Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation, on behalf of the Tourism Department. Tourism Minister Raju Kumar Singh emphasized that the project would boost tourism in Patna, providing residents and visitors with a smart, safe, and sustainable waterway travel experience.
Tourism Secretary Lokesh Kumar Singh shared that the Water Metro service in Patna will operate from Digha Ghat to Kangan Ghat, passing through NIT Ghat and Gai Ghat. Trials of the service are expected to begin soon, with ten more locations identified for future expansion. This initiative is poised to revolutionize the city’s water tourism system, reducing travel time and pollution while promoting tourism and local development. Patna is among 18 selected cities in India where a modern and efficient urban water transport system is being developed.
