The Patna Metro Rail Project, an ambitious initiative aimed at improving urban connectivity in the city, has reached a significant milestone. Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) -01 has achieved its first tunnel breakthrough, marking a new phase in the city’s metro infrastructure development. This breakthrough, witnessed at the Patna University metro station with the arrival of TBM-01, highlights the steady progress of the Patna Metro project.

Achieving the Breakthrough

This milestone was achieved under the guidance of Advisor (Special Works) Shri Daljeet Singh, signifying the collective effort driving the project. TBM-01, operational since May 2023 at Moin Ul Haq stadium, has diligently worked to construct a 1.5 km tunnel connecting MUH and Patna University. This engineering feat marks the initial stage of a 1.5 km journey to Gandhi Maidan, navigating through densely populated areas and overcoming challenges posed by the city’s old structures.

Challenges and Successes

The section between Moin Ul Haq stadium and Patna University presented one of the most demanding aspects of the Patna Metro tunneling project. Despite the complexities, TBM-01 operated continuously to construct a fully lined tunnel, laying the foundation for improved metro connectivity. This accomplishment not only demonstrates technological proficiency but also underscores the commitment of the teams involved in realizing a modern and efficient metro system for Patna.

Overview of Patna Metro

The Patna Metro, also referred to as the Patna Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS), is a significant initiative aimed at transforming urban transportation. Planned in five phases, the metro system will be owned and operated by the state-run Patna Metro Rail Corporation. The first phase, set to be completed by March 2025, will feature five stations, marking a pivotal moment in the city’s transportation network.

Cost and Progress

Implemented through a public-private partnership model, the Patna Metro project is estimated to cost ₹133,657.7 million (US$1.7 billion), excluding land acquisition expenses managed by the Bihar government. Phase-1 includes both elevated and underground tracks, covering a total length of 31.66 km. Larsen & Toubro (L&T), a renowned infrastructure company, secured the contract for designing and building Corridor-2 of Phase-1, highlighting strategic partnerships and collaborative efforts in the project
